Meanwhile, the second position is occupied by DKI Jakarta with an AQI of 186, or the Unhealthy category.
List of Cities with the Worst Air Quality
Based on IQAir's real-time data, here are the five areas with the worst air quality in Indonesia on Tuesday morning:
- South Tangerang – AQI US 210 (Very Unhealthy)
- Jakarta – AQI US 186 (Unhealthy)
- Tangerang – AQI US 149 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
- Surabaya – AQI US 144 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
- Palembang – AQI US 142 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
PM2.5 is the Main Cause of Air Pollution
The poor air quality in Tangsel is dominated by high concentrations of PM2.5 (Particulate Matter 2.5), which are fine particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size that can penetrate deep into the lungs and into the bloodstream.
Due to their very small size, PM2.5 cannot be optimally filtered by the body's natural defense system. High exposure poses a risk of respiratory problems, heart disease, and worsening public health conditions.
The most vulnerable groups affected include children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with lung or cardiovascular diseases.
Residents Urged to Reduce Outdoor Activities
With air quality in the very unhealthy category, the public is urged to reduce outdoor activities, wear masks when active outside the home, and maintain their body's condition by drinking plenty of water.
For those with respiratory or heart conditions, it is advised to be extra cautious and seek medical attention immediately if experiencing health problems due to air pollution exposure.
